Writing is more of an art form than many of us realize. Over the years, good writing seems to have lost much of its flair and finesse. Gone are the days of letters and poetry, only replaced by crude and childish chat. But you do not have to be one of the masses; with a little bit of practice and discipline, you can be one of the greats.
The most important rule to keep in mind when you write would be to know who you are writing for. Not everyone is going to read your writing, so it would make sense to tailor your writing to fit your audience accordingly. Learning how to become a better writer starts with knowing who you will be writing for. The audience is who you are trying to reach with your writing, so write for them. This applies to everything you write.
When you are writing a letter to a friend, you are not going to write it the same way as you are writing a letter to a business. The tone and sentence structure will be more formal with the business letter than the one that you are writing to your friend. Learning how to become a better writer is a matter of knowing who you are writing for and then making sure that your vocabulary, spelling, and grammar are all up to par.
In order to write in proper English, you will have to know that there is a difference between American writing and British writing. To become a better writer, one must know which form or style of English that you will be writing. More to the point is which English language of the target audience that you will be dealing with. There are small differences that, though may not seem like a big deal, could very well turn into problems for you later down the road.
After you decide which English style you will be writing, you are one step closer in learning how to become a better writer. Writing involves words which you pull from your personal vocabulary. Therefore it would stand to reason that expanding your current vocabulary would be a great way to improve your writing.

Having a larger pool of vocabulary to draw on would ensure that your writing is not only better but also more enjoyable to read. With more words to choose from while writing, there is less chance that your writing will sound repetitive. Repetitiveness is boring and there is nothing worst than having to suffer through reading something that is boring. There is great chance that whoever you are writing to or for will not even read the entire piece. They would grow too bored and stop reading, which would defeat your purpose for writing in the first place.
In order to improve your vocabulary, make sure you can spell all those new words correctly. Spelling is very important on your writing journey to become a better writer. If you are misspelling words constantly, no one will know what you are trying to say. If you want people to take you seriously then knowing the proper way to spell is crucial. Spelling properly is fairly easy these days as most if not all word processing software comes installed with a spell check and thesaurus.
An easy way to improve your vocabulary is to read more. Not just those cheap romance novels, but good works of literature. Read and be aware of the vocabulary they use and understand the differences. Perhaps join a book club so that you are not only reading good books, but you are also associating with people who have better vocabulary.
Another way to become a better writer is to improve your reading. While many people think they already know how to read, there is always room for improvement. Reading ties into your vocabulary and spelling as well. Take the time to read aloud so that you can get the feel for how the word sounds. Many writers do not do this which can lead to their writing lacking a certain flow. After you write and you read it aloud, rewrite those spots till you can read through it without any hitch.
Finally but certainly not the least is the use of proper grammar. Grammar is the backbone of good writing. It is what makes your writing flow and gives it life that it needs in order for your words to be heard. Understand what a noun is, how it is used, when to use it and why it is used. Know the proper use of pronoun, verb, adverb, and adjective. If your grammar is poor, no matter how wonderful you think your written work is, the chances are others will think that you are a joke.
